Frequently asked questions

How is the required wattage calculated?

The calculator multiplies the room's volume (length × width × height) by the selected property-type factor. The factor provides an estimate based on the property's insulation and typical heating requirements.

Which property type should I select?

Choose the option that most closely reflects the building. Newer, well-insulated properties generally need less output than older or poorly insulated buildings. Commercial spaces and buildings with high ceilings may need a higher allowance.

How is the hourly running cost calculated?

The estimate uses the selected heaters' combined rated wattage and the electricity unit rate entered at the top of the calculator. It assumes the heaters operate continuously at full output for one hour. Thermostat settings, room conditions and actual usage will affect the real cost. Standing charges are not included.

Can I change my electricity rate?

Yes. Change the electricity price at the top of the calculator and the estimated hourly running cost for every room will update automatically. The default is 26.32p/kWh, the Ofgem average Direct Debit electricity unit rate for Great Britain from 1 October to 31 December 2026. Your actual tariff may differ.

Does the calculator guarantee the room will reach a particular temperature?

No. The result is an estimate, not a heat-loss survey. Insulation, windows, draughts, external temperatures, ceiling height and the position of the heaters can all affect performance. For complex or high-ceiling spaces, contact us for guidance.

Can I change the number of heaters?

Yes. The calculator suggests a combination automatically, but you can change the quantity of each heater model. If your selected output falls below the estimated requirement, the calculator will flag this and prevent the items being added to your basket until the requirement is met.

Wattage calculations are indicative only and should not replace a professional heat-loss assessment where one is required. Always follow the heater manufacturer's installation instructions and clearance requirements.
